Every day of the year, 09:00–18:30, with last entry around 18:00. Tickets sold here are valid for that daytime session only. Hours have varied since the 2026 change of management, so check the museum’s own notice on the day.

A full walk through the cistern generally takes about an hour, though you are welcome to explore the walkways and the Medusa heads at your own pace.

Yes. Expert-led guided tours run daily and can be booked online in advance. Audio guides are also offered at the entrance counter in more than 12 languages.

No. The Basilica Cistern sells its own admission and the national Museum Pass (Müzekart) is not accepted, whichever body is running the site. Ticketing arrangements have been changing since the June 2026 handover, so check the museum’s current policy before you travel.

Tickets can be bought at the door, but we strongly recommend booking online in advance to skip the queues, particularly in high season (April to October).

Yes. Discounted tickets are available for students with a valid international student card and for visitors aged 65 and over. Both must be shown with identification at entry.

A booking may be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours before the start of your chosen entry date and time. No reason is needed. After that point the booking is non-refundable, because the entry allocation has been committed and cannot be resold. The full terms are in the Cancellation & Refund Policy.

The Basilica Cistern is a historic underground structure, and access conditions can differ from a modern museum. Visitors who need step-free access or mobility assistance should confirm the current route with visitor services before booking rather than rely on a general statement.

Because of the historic fabric and the humidity underground there is no permanent seating in the main hall, but benches are available near the exit and in the courtyard.

Personal photography is permitted and encouraged. Tripods, professional lighting and drones are not allowed without prior written consent from the museum administration.

There is no dress code — the cistern is a secular museum, unlike Istanbul’s working mosques. We do recommend comfortable, non-slip footwear, as the historic walkways can be damp.
