Entrance Procedures & Security

Skip the on-site ticket purchase line.

Security, capacity control and mandatory entrance procedures cannot be skipped.

On arrival, go straight to the entrance area for ticket holders; you do not need to wait in the purchase queue. Because of the historic structure and its preservation rules, every visitor still passes through a mandatory security screening.

At peak hours and in high season there may be a wait at that checkpoint. Venue management also enforces a strict capacity limit to protect the structure and the experience, so entry is occasionally paused to let visitors inside leave first.

Digital Audio Guide

Important Equipment Notice

The audio guide is delivered digitally through a smartphone application. To use it you need to bring:

  • A fully charged smartphone (iOS or Android)
  • Your own headphones or earphones
  • An internet connection to download the content before you descend — signal is limited underground

No physical devices are handed out on site.

Suggested Itinerary

Visitors coming down the long staircase into the cistern, the brick wall of the shaft lit beside them.
Descent & the imperial staircase (5 min)
A row of shafts receding towards the stair, Corinthian and plain capitals in the same frame.
The central walkway & columns (15 min)
The Weeping Column, its shaft carved with teardrop and eye motifs, wet under the lit brick vaults.
The Weeping Column (10 min)
The Medusa head set upside down as a column base, the carved face inverted above the coins in the water.
The Medusa bases (15 min)

Descent & the imperial staircase (5 min)

Begin down the 52 steps, noticing the immediate drop in temperature and the change in acoustics.

The central walkway & columns (15 min)

Follow the raised walkway past the 336 columns, taking in the Corinthian and entirely plain capitals reused from older Roman buildings.

The Weeping Column (10 min)

Find the Tear Drop Column, also called the Hen's Eye. Note the damp surface and the carving, traditionally held to honour the workers who died during construction.

The Medusa bases (15 min)

Finish in the far north-western corner with the two Medusa head column bases — one inverted, one on its side — and their unresolved placement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to print my ticket?
No. There is nothing to print and nothing to show on a screen. Bring your confirmation to the meeting point near the museum and the representative hands you the ticket you use to enter.
Is the venue accessible for wheelchairs?
The visitor route runs on raised walkways over the water, and reaching them involves stairs. This is a historic underground monument, so anyone who needs step-free access or mobility assistance should confirm the current arrangements with the museum before booking rather than rely on a general statement.
How cold is it underground?
The cistern stays cool and fairly constant year-round, well below street temperature in summer. Bring a light jacket or jumper even on a hot day.
Can I use a tripod for photography?
Professional equipment — tripods and large lighting rigs — is not allowed without prior commercial authorisation, for flow and safety. Handheld photography without flash is fine.
What if I arrive late for my time slot?
Tickets are valid for the slot you choose. A short grace period is usually honoured, but a significant delay may mean entry is refused once capacity is reached. Plan to arrive 15 minutes early.
