Tickets: prices, options and how to book

In early June 2026 the Basilica Cistern passed from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s cultural company, Kültür A.Ş., to the General Directorate of Foundations. The site closed briefly for the handover and for maintenance, then reopened. Prices, online booking and the exact rules were still settling at the time of writing, and the municipality has challenged the transfer in court — so treat everything below as the most consistent recent reporting rather than as a fixed schedule, and confirm on the day.

Standard ticket prices

These are the face-value figures most consistently cited through 2026. They are quoted in Turkish lira in a year of high inflation and mid-season administrative change, so they move.

• Daytime entry, 09:00–18:30 — foreign visitors around 1,950 TL; Turkish citizens around 450 TL; students with a valid Turkish student card around 90 TL; children under 7 free.
• Night entry, 19:30–22:00 — foreign visitors around 3,000 TL; Turkish citizens around 750 TL; students around 400 TL; children under 7 free.
• Audio guide, where offered — around 300 TL for foreign visitors, around 100 TL for residents.

What the ticket does not include

• The national Museum Pass and Müzekart are not valid here.
• Payment at the door is usually by credit or debit card, or by İstanbulkart. Cash is often not accepted.
• Tickets are generally single-entry and same-day only.
• Some reports after the change of management quoted different figures — around 2,250 TL in a few cases — which is the clearest sign that on-site confirmation is worth the two minutes.

The ticket options

• Standard daytime entry: a self-guided visit during regular hours.
• Night Shift: an evening visit with different lighting and atmosphere. Sold separately, and sometimes only at the box office.
• Timed-entry tickets bought in advance: they often include an audio guide, and cost more than the face value depending on what is included.
• Guided tours or combination tickets: combined with Hagia Sophia, Topkapı, the Blue Mosque and others. These cost more, but they can save time and include a guide.
• On-site purchase: face-value price, but expect queues especially in peak season, at weekends, or on cruise-ship days — which can be 30–90 minutes.

How to book

Booking in advance runs in the same order wherever you do it: select a date, then a timed slot for the daytime or the Night Shift, then a ticket category, then enter the visitor details and pay. Tickets are usually name-based and may be checked against ID.

An online ticket can remove the need to buy a ticket at the on-site counter. Security, capacity control and the mandatory entrance checks cannot be bypassed.

At the entrance, buy at the ticket office on Yerebatan Caddesi, near Hagia Sophia. Credit card, cash or İstanbulkart only in most cases. Best for low-season weekday mornings, if the queues are short.

Advance tickets are worth it during summer, at weekends or at midday. On quiet weekday mornings they are usually unnecessary.

Practical notes

• Allow 30–60 minutes inside for most visits.
• Go right at opening or in the late afternoon to miss the worst of the crowds.
• The entrance is at Alemdar Mahallesi, Yerebatan Caddesi 1/3, Sultanahmet, Fatih — a few minutes’ walk from Hagia Sophia.
• There are stairs. If mobility is a concern, check the current arrangements before booking rather than relying on a general statement.
• Bring photo identification matching the name on the ticket if the ticket carries one.

Because of the recent ownership change, the safest approach is to check the museum’s own notice, or the ticket office, for real-time confirmation of the opening status, exact prices and booking method on the day you plan to visit. Prices and rules can change, and the information above reflects the most consistent recent reports.
