Opening hours and the best time to visit

The Basilica Cistern is open every day of the year, public holidays included. What surprises people is that the day is split into two separate sessions with a real closure between them.

Opening hours

• Daytime session: 09:00–18:30. Last entry is usually around 18:00, so visitors have time inside before closing.
• Closed for changeover: 18:30–19:30. The site is completely shut during this hour while staff reset the lighting and prepare for the evening.
• Night Shift: 19:30–22:00. It needs a separate, higher-priced ticket, and it usually runs different, more theatrical lighting.

Hours can change for special events, maintenance, or because of the 2026 transfer of management from the municipality to the General Directorate of Foundations. Reports through the second half of 2026 have suggested that the Night Shift is sometimes unavailable and that daytime hours are occasionally adjusted. Check the museum’s own notice on the day.

The best time to arrive

• Right at opening, 09:00–10:30: the quietest hour and a half. Fewer tour groups, better photographs, a more peaceful room.
• Late afternoon, 16:30–18:30: the day-trippers have left and the crowd thins out again.
• Avoid 11:00–15:00: peak time, when the cruise parties, tour buses and school groups arrive. The walkways are narrow and it shows.
• The Night Shift, when it is running: quieter and more dramatic. The one to choose if you want the cinematic version.

The best days and seasons

Weekdays are noticeably quieter than Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays; Tuesday and Wednesday are the quietest of all.

• Shoulder seasons, March–May and September–October: the best balance overall — pleasant weather above ground and a manageable crowd below it.
• Winter, December–February: the fewest visitors of the year, and the cistern itself stays mild underground.
• Summer, June–August: the busiest and hottest. Expect longer queues and a denser room, though the cool air underground is a genuine relief from the street.
